Where did those cute little bears come from?
In the beginning…the short version. The Boyds Collection Ltd.™ began back in 1979 as an Antique Shop in the home of the owner and developer G.M. Lowenthal (better known as the “Head Bean”) and his partner, now wife Justina Unger. They lived in Boyds, Maryland, thus the name Boyds for their new business.
In 1992, the Head Bean 
and his partner began to design sculptural interpretations of their “now famous” plush Bears…and in 1993, The Bearstone Collection™, a line of antique-style resin bear figurines, was introduced. Each Boyd’s sculpture is hand painted, individually numbered, gift boxed, and comes with a Certificate Of Authenticity.
